Jake flipped the water off and ran a towel over his dripping hair. Heâd shaved, then spent the last ten minutes under the cold spray trying to cool himself down and chill the hell out.
So far it hadnât done a bit of good.
Stepping out of the shower stall, he wrapped the towel around his waist and tried not to think about what was going on in the main cabin of his plane, but failed. Marley was out there with McKnight, doing God-knew-what. Probably enjoying it more than sheâd enjoyed it with him.
Fuck. He braced his hands on the edge of the sink, dropped his head, and drew in a deep breath. Thatâwhat had happened in the galleyâwas pure stupidity. Last night had been hallucinogens. But this . . . this had been too much adrenaline, too little self-control, and not nearly enough brain cells.
She was his employee, not his girlfriend. He didnât even want a girlfriend. His track record with women proved he wasnât relationship materialâjust like his father. Besides which, this was Marley. If he wasnât careful from here on out, he could lose her for good.
An image of her dancing around that bonfire pinged through his brain. Followed by the way sheâd kissed him in that hut, then dragged him to the floor and completely rocked his world.
His skin grew hot. His hands sweaty. More frustrated than heâd been when heâd come in here, he turned out of the bathroom, found fresh clothes in his bag, and pulled them on. What he really wanted to do was stretch out on the couch in his stateroom and sleep for seven hours, but he was too fired up to get any kind of rest. The only thing that was going to cool him out now was a bottle of Jack and a few hours of mindless television.
He opened the stateroom door, intent on finding that bottle, then drew to a stop. Marley sat on the couch, her back angled Jakeâs way, holding McKnight close. His hand ran up and down her spine in an intimate way as he whispered words Jake couldnât make out. Neither seemed to notice him, but Jakeâs stomach twisted into a tight, hard knot at the sight, and before he could retreat back into the safety of his stateroom, McKnightâs eyes lifted and zeroed in.
If heâd seen gratitude or relief or even happiness in the other manâs eyes, Jake would have turned around and left them alone. But he didnât see any of that. What he saw was victory. A flash of gloating, then a whisper of something dark.
Every alarm bell he had went off all over again. This guy was not at all what he seemed. Jake didnât care what Marley believed. No way in hell he was leaving her alone with McKnight.
He stepped past the pair and headed toward the galley. At his back, Marley said, âJake. I didnât hear you come out.â
No, of course she hadnât. Because she was too wrapped up in McKnight to notice what he was doing.
